31 Days of dipping with the Dipping Cyclist.

Welcome to our Seashell blog posts where we dive into the stories of the Seashell people. We hope to use this space and platform to inspire others and to start important conversations.

We set a challenge to dip everyday in the month of October. People from all over the world joined in. From the sea to bath tubs. Here is a blog from one of our Seashell dippers on how his month went dipping every day.

"You won’t regret giving it a go. Mental health game changer"!

Name, Location & Occupation?

Llew Roberts, Manchester, Mechanical Design Engineer.

What is a fun fact about you?

A long running joke (which is actually true fact) is there are very few hobbies and sports that I have not tried.

Maybe a live quick-fire Q&A is in order to find out what I have or haven’t done.

I was also a Welsh international sports person.

How long have you been dipping/swimming for in general?

I have always been a wild swimmer from a very young age. Probably comes from growing up in Snowdonia.
This is probably my first year of more serious cold-water dipping.

Currently 130 days into 365 days of consecutive cold dips.

How did you find out about the Seashell dip a day challenge?

I found out about it from following Corals on Instagram.

Why did you decide to take part in the challenge?

Who doesn’t love a challenge!

I can’t say no to one! I also took part hoping to inspire others by sharing my cold-water journey through October.

Group Swimming

How did you find it physically and mentally during the challenge?

100% the hardest dips have been those in barrels at 6:30am if it's cold and wet outside and warm inside!

A tough mind battle to get out there!

"It is impossible to not be happy from cold water swimming".

Where did you dip? Sea, rivers, lochs, barrel, shower, bath etc?

Through the challenge I have swam in the Sea, Rivers and dipped in the barrel (although daily barrel dipping is in my daily routine, usually before bed).

Swimming in the sea

Rated No.1

"Seashell Robes have the best robes on the market and they’re growing in popularity."

"Not only do Seashell make waterproof changing robes, but they also have their own community. Seashell practice what they preach and put their products to good use in wild swimming and fitness community events up in Scotland."

What is your favourite piece of seashell kit and why?

I personally just have a hat which I love. My kids have the towel robes which have been fab for making river dips easier to take them along with me during the colder months.

Diving Abroad

Did you have a favourite spot?

This month it would have to be Watkin Path Snowdonia.

What did you learn during this challenge?

That there are so many like minded people out there!

In what way is mental health and community important to you?

As one of the north west dippers admin for group dips, happiness is the number one thing that everyone gets from wild swimming. It is impossible to not be happy from cold water swimming. In all my months of dipping I have yet to come across anyone to have a negative experience. The wild swimming community is amazing because I believe, everyone has the same mindset so making friends is super easy!

So many people I have taken swimming have said they wouldn’t have done so if it wasn’t for the group meets.

Having company swimming makes a huge difference.

Bonjour and out!

Thank you very much to Llew for his interview. We very much look forward to seeing more of his adventures and hope to meet him and his family on one of our UK tours in the future.

Our aim is to share other people's stories. Whether you have a story about mental health, community or why you started wild swimming for example.
