Aerial arts combines elements of dance, gymnastics, and acrobatics, all performed while suspended in the air. Artists use apparatuses like silks, hoops, trapeze, and ropes to create stunning visual displays of strength, flexibility, and grace, often telling a story or evoking deep emotions through their movements. In this interview with Sarah Wyatt, who holds 3 national championship titles, we'll explore the ways in which she maintains balance and focus, particularly through the practice of cold water therapy, and gain insights into the challenges and triumphs that come with such a demanding discipline.
How long have you been practicing aerial arts, and what first inspired you to start this journey?
I started my aerial journey in January 2020, just before lockdown. It was sort of by accident. When I moved to Scotland, I saw a photo of a woman in an aerial hoop and thought, "I have to try that." I did, and was immediately hooked.
How has your style or approach to aerial arts evolved over the years? Are there any significant milestones in your career that stand out to you?
I've had a mix of tuition, and being self-taught. Both have their benefits; I needed to be taught at the start of my aerial journey, but as I grew in strength and ability, realised I needed to develop my own distinctive style - often, by myself. I'd say winning my first national competition, after choregraphing and honing my own routine, showed me that I really was capable of pushing myself to a place I hadn't thought possible.
Have you ever had a moment during a performance where everything just "clicked," and you felt completely in the zone? What does that feel like?
My second year at the national comp! That was an incredible day, performatively. I felt so calm, not a single niggle of nerves. I rocked up, said my hellos and performed my heart out. I think I will always try to emulate the confidence that I felt that year in the future.
As an aerialist, you're constantly pushing the limits of your body. How does spending time in nature, especially through cold water therapy, help you stay grounded and connected to your body?
It's about feeling how you are in your body - when are the days to push, and when are the days to pull back. Cold water therapy is such a good, clean way of giving your muscles the space to recover, clearing your head and help maintain the focus.
What challenges do you face in maintaining focus and motivation during the intense training period before a championship?
I'm finding now that where my strength came in training alone, now I'm feeling the need for external feedback and input. Holding all the responsibility of coach and student becomes quite exhausting. But I will say I have gotten really good at compromising on giving up social events and late nights, and actually really enjoy the one-track mindset of chasing the win.
What advice would you give to other aerialists or athletes who are considering incorporating cold water therapy into their recovery routine?
I couldn't recommend it enough. The difference I've seen in upping my measure of ice therapy is crazy. That and sleep, I would say, are the most important parts of recovery for me. The initial bite of the cold is worth it, for the overall benefits of the muscular recovery.
