Choosing the Right Waterproof Drybag.

Before we dive into what you can fit in your waterproof drybag, it's important to choose the right one.

The Seashell drybag is fully waterproof with 500 PVC coating which keeps your kit safely protected against the elements. As we are about to discuss, the bag is something I would describe as being a Mary Poppins bag.

-25L Waterproof main compartment.

-Roll-top closure.

-Side clips 2 inside pockets (1 zip+1 mesh).

-Outside water-resistant pocket.

-2 Padded shoulder straps.

-Padded back.

-2 Side mesh pockets.

Gear for Wild Swimming.

  • Clothing. It is really important to make sure that you have enough clothing for before and after your swim that will keep you warm and safe. It is better to take more with you just in case.
    - Cosy Socks.

    - Joggers.

    - Hoodie/jumper.

    - Long sleeve thermal top.

    - Beanie.

    - Gloves.

    - Easy to put on shoes.

  • Wetsuit or Swimsuit: Depending on the water temperature and your personal preference, you may need a wetsuit or a swimsuit. Make sure it's the right fit and style for your swim.
  • Goggles: A comfortable and well-fitting pair of goggles is crucial for clear vision in the water. I would recommend open-water swimming goggles as they have a wider lens and are a lot more comfortable especially if in the water for long periods. 
  • Swim Caps: I would recommend wearing two caps; a neoprene skull cap (to help with keeping your head warm and then a  brightly coloured silicone cap to help with visibility and keep hair out of your face.
  • Tow Float: A tow float is a buoyant device that you can tether to your waist to increase visibility and provide a resting point if needed.
  • Swim Fins: If you enjoy going further and having help with propulsion and stability, consider packing swim fins that are specifically designed for open water swimming.
  • Lubricant: Anti-chafing lubricants can prevent skin irritation caused by friction during long swims and make it easier to get your wetsuit off at the end if you are wearing one.
  • Towelling robe: After your swim, a towelling robe towel will keep you warm and help you dry off before getting changed.
  • Changing Robe: After your swim, you can use one of these to get dry and get change in whilst getting very cosy. Perfect for those super cold swims especially if it is raining.
  • Snacks: High-energy snacks, like fruit bars, bananas etc and things they are less likely to freeze (if heading out for a super cold one), can be a lifesaver during long swims.
  • Hot water bottle: This can really help you heat up. You can fit one perfectly into one of the side pockets of the Seashell Changing robe.
  • Thermometer: Now this isn't essential but it is always fun to see what the temperature of the water is that you are swimming/dipping in and can be a great indicator for how long you should be in if you are getting into it. 
  • Safety Equipment: In some cases, you might want to include safety equipment, such as a whistle or a small first-aid kit.

Once you've gathered your essentials, it's time to pack them into your waterproof drybag efficiently. Here are some tips to make the most of the available space:

  1. Roll, Don't Fold: Roll your gear tightly instead of folding it to save space and create an airtight seal when closing the drybag.
  2. Prioritize Essentials: Place the most important items at the top of the bag for easy access during your swim.
  3. Use Dry Sacks: Consider using smaller dry sacks to compartmentalize your gear and keep items organized.
  4. Remove Excess Air: Squeeze out excess air from the drybag before sealing it to make it as compact as possible.
  5. Test the Seal: Before hitting the water, always double-check that your drybag is properly sealed to prevent any water from getting in.
